Evening Time Trial Series

The Lamb Pub, Iron Acton
First event Tuesday 5th June

After a great 2011 culminating in the Kingswood Tri Vs VCB showdown… Won by VCB!! – only just now is the time for a rematch!!

We have a bolstered evening time trial series for 2012 season.

We’ll be sharing the series with VCB, alternating the weeks. So one week we’ll organise the ’10′ then VCB organise the following week. Maximum number of riders per week will be 40 and we now have to increase the evening fee to £3.00. This is largely down to having to register the series and levies to CTT. Preference will be with the organising club for riders on the night and as always we’ll required some marshals and pushers off etc.

The series starts on Tuesday 5th June, then through to 7th August, with the re-match on the 14th August! Signing-on is from 7pm with first rider off at 7.30pm. Parking will now be in The Lamb Pub, Iron Acton, the owner is happy for us to do this but please park with consideration

5th June – Joint (VCB to train KIT)

12th June – KIT

19th June – VCB

26th June – KIT

3rd July – VCB

10th July – KIT

17th July – VCB

24th July – KIT

31st July – VCB

7th August – VCB vs KIT comp

Bath Hilly Half Marathon Results

27th November 2011

This was very tough half marathon and 0.7 of mile long due to a marshal mistake!

Well organised, apart from the detour! You get a nice finishers medal and running t-shirt with your name on afterwards.

My legs did not hurt this much after a marathon! But I very much enjoyed it and would recommend this race for next year.

At the end it was strange being offered beer or water, jaffa cakes, flapjack or a carrot?????   I couldn’t manage the beer, watching Andy I was unsure if he was enjoying it or not so thought it was best to stick to the water!

  •  1st Alec Woods =  01:36:10
  • 7th Dan Carr =  01:45:34 41

Venue: Hot Water Lane, Kingswood off of Station Road near SJ Cooks Garage

Time: 9.45am to start at 10:00

Tinsel/dressing up in Christmas outfit a must – if you can’t run for any reason some help marshalling and/or time keeping would be appreciated. -

Don’t forget to bring the kids as all ages catered for – prizes for all children!

Cooked Breakfast after (you pay for what you want)

Slight change this year where prizes will only be for 1st Lady and Gent.

The run is along the same loop used for the 3 day Tri back in August (wood post and back along Ring Road Cycle path).

This isn’t a serious race, just the chance for some friendly competition between club members/Bitton RR.  We hope we can hold this race regularly throughout 2012, to serve as a benchmark for people and a way to judge fitness levels throughout the season around the same course.  It will take place on a week night during the summer.

Quite a few members have entered the club races: Bath Half Marathon and the Cotswold 113 Middle Distance Tri, which is fantastic!  If you could let me know if you are entered in the races and I will publish the list.

email me at lee.t.francis@gmail.com

I’m in the process of sorting out the survey for the club sprint and olympic distance races and hope to get them sent out to very soon, been a little busy sorry!

Club Races 2012

At the meeting with the Nutritionist on Friday 21st October, quite a few people were interested in racing the Cotswold 113 Middle distance triathlon, due to its reasonable cost, accessible location and knowledge of how good the race was this year.  As a result of this interest, I propose that this is one of the races that we enter as a club next year.

Entries for the race open online Tuesday 1st November 2011 (that is this Tuesday!) and the date for the race is June 24th 2012

I will sort out a vote for Sprint and Olympic distance club races later on, but I’m sending this out now due to the likely popularity of the event.  I imagine it will probably fill up quickly so don’t want anyone to miss out.  It would be good to get as many people from the club to race this as possible so we can encourage and support each other and give ourselves more training options.

Thanks Lee

I would like to thank Philippa for sending me the details of this race; I really enjoyed it and thought it was bargain at £7 each with a free cup of tea and only £1.50 for a roll and chocolate cake afterwards.

It was a good end of season race, well organised by Chippenham Wheelers and great to see 12 people from the club racing and enjoying it. This is definitely in the calendar for next year and lets hope we can get a few teams from the club racing.

Langport Tri – Sunday 18th September

This did not start too well, I’ve been working in the Isle of Man and the flight back to Gloucester was a little rough to say the least, still it’s been worse.
I had a free entry for this event as I was Refereeing with Paul Lester who organises the Taunton Tri, we were sharing the duties with me off first at 8:45 so I could get back for Paul to go out.
It started as a disaster right from the beginning, first tri for two years and putting on my goggles the elastic snapped, lesson learnt there then. I had only swum once this year, the week before the tri !!!
Apart from no goggles the swim was my usual poor effort made even worse with no practice but the pool although open air was nice and warm, this was a blessing in disguise as it was pouring with rain and I was getting cold waiting for the start, so swim over off I plod to T1, not too bad, luckily I’ve a rear light set up on the bike so after a reasonable transition off I went, the first left turn at Langport comes up quite quickly and I remembered going into a slide at this bend the last time I did it in 1999 (I do like to keep all my records). After the turn the rain got harder and it was getting very difficult to see, there was loads of standing water and half way out on the bike there is a long hill, not particularly steep but it goes on, on turning left to start the hill the road surface felt strange, I looked down and the rear wheel seemed ok and I had new tyres and tubes so didn’t think it was a puncture, I continued until about half way up the hill when I had a strange vibration and knew it was a flat, now if you’ve ever tried to change a tube in the pouring rain, no glasses ( I put my contacts in for the race ), new Continental evo paves which they use on Paris Rubeaux fitted to Zipps you will know what a job it is, this took me 32 mins ( on Garmin ) and two very sore thumbs. I started to panic now realising I had to get back so pushed hard, making the power meter alarm have a head fit but luckily the rain had stopped and I eventually arrived at T2, I was going to stop there and retire but Paul said I had loads of time ( hasn’t seen me run before) so off I trotted, through the field of rather cross Geese up and down the lane and back to the finish. Although it was a disaster I did enjoy it as I do like Langport and making allowances for the puncture I was 12 minutes slower than in 1999 so that’s not too bad, I would of finished third in class, perhaps 2nd had I tried a bit more on the run !!!

IM Wales Results ……. Well done to all competitors for finishing in extremely tough conditions – There was a big swell in the swim/ hilly and windy bike and a hilly run!!!  I have not put the transition times in as they were not too quick on the count of a 1,000m run from the swim and T1!!!!

Ironman Wales Results Analysis: Compared to Ironman UK

Congratulations to the 1134 triathletes who completed the inaugural Ironman Wales triathlon in an average time of 13:02. Any race over the 13 hour mark is one of the toughest in the world, and the 12% DNF rate, also one of the highest of all ironman events, proves the point.

With two races in the United Kingdom, each known for difficulty (UK average finish time in 2010 was 13:01, nearly identical to 2011 Wales, though in 2011 UK was much faster at 12:35), we compared the two by age group to see how comparable the courses may be.

A great event well supported – there were 6 food stations including a full lunch at Theal – Just for info we got a bus home!  our bikes were returned to bristol on trucks.
